One caution on the bottom of the market: pigtailing with twist-on wire nuts — including the purple Al/Cu-labeled ones — is cheaper still, but it is not a CPSC-recognized permanent repair, and CPSC-sponsored testing showed twist-on connectors overheating severely. CPSC Publication 516 settles what the right count is: a proper repair should include every connection or splice involving aluminum wire — outlets, dimmers, switches, light fixtures, directly wired appliances like dishwashers and furnaces, and junction boxes. The thoroughness isn't optional.
