Many homeowners insurance carriers surcharge, require remediation, or decline coverage on homes with 1965–1973 aluminum branch wiring. Most will insure the home after a CPSC-recognized repair — a complete copper rewire, COPALUM crimps, or Alumiconn connectors — is completed and documented. The documentation, not the repair alone, is what clears the underwriting file.

Carriers treat 1965–1973 aluminum branch wiring as a quantified fire-hazard exposure: per a CPSC/Franklin Research Institute survey, homes built before 1972 with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach fire-hazard conditions than homes wired with copper.
That statistic deserves precision, because most articles misquote it. The survey, cited in CPSC Publication 516, measured outlet connections in pre-1972 homes and defined “fire hazard conditions” as a cover-plate screw reaching 300°F, sparking, or charring. It is not a claim that these homes burn down 55 times more often — it is a connection-level risk, repeated at every outlet, switch, and fixture in the house.
The engineering explains why “it's been fine for fifty years” doesn't move an underwriter. Era aluminum wire deforms under terminal screws, expands and contracts more than copper, and grows a resistive oxide film as connections loosen. Per CPSC, the damage is cumulative, and failing connections seldom give warning before overheating. Hidden, cumulative risk at dozens of points is exactly the profile actuaries price against.
Two things aluminum wiring is not: recalled, and illegal. It was never recalled, and modern AA-8000 series aluminum remains NEC-permitted for service entrances and feeders. The insurance concern is specific to solid small-gauge branch circuits installed roughly 1965–1973, after a mid-1960s copper price spike pushed builders to aluminum for 15- and 20-amp circuits. One of three outcomes: a premium surcharge, coverage conditioned on remediation by a deadline, or a declination — at renewal, a non-renewal notice.
Surcharges. Where carriers leave the wiring in place, homeowners and industry sources report premium loadings of roughly 10 to 50 percent — figures that are anecdotal and regional; no carrier publishes a rate table for aluminum wiring. Consumer guides such as Policygenius confirm the pattern (surcharge, require repair, or decline) without naming carriers.
Conditions and inspections. Carriers that will write the risk usually condition it on proof — often a four-point inspection, dated photos, and receipts showing updates. At least one carrier's published Missouri homeowners guideline lists aluminum wiring as unacceptable outright and makes homes over fifty years old ineligible without documented updates. When a carrier says “provide proof of remediation,” the documentation chain below is what satisfies the sentence.
Non-renewal risk. Aluminum wiring enters the carrier's file through a new-policy inspection, a renewal review, an adjuster's note on an unrelated claim, or a quote from a competing carrier. Once in the file, it does not come out on its own — the flag follows the home until remediation evidence replaces it. The best time to document a repair is before the underwriting cycle finds the wiring.
Not without written warning. A Missouri insurer that declines to renew a homeowners policy must send written notice at least 30 days in advance, stating the specific reason for the non-renewal.
If the reason is aluminum wiring, the notice must say so plainly — which turns a vague fear of being dropped into a defined problem with a defined clock: at least thirty days to remediate and document, or to shop the policy.
Missouri also maintains a backstop: the Missouri FAIR Plan, the state's last-resort property insurance market since 1969, which non-renewal notices must point you toward. It inspects the properties it covers, and its coverage is narrower than a standard policy (liability, earthquake, flood, and sewer backup are excluded) — a bridge while you fix the problem, not a destination.
To be clear, because it gets misstated: no Missouri insurance regulation specifically targets aluminum wiring. The flag comes from each carrier's own underwriting guidelines, which is why outcomes differ carrier to carrier. The question simply comes up often here: per a state analysis of Census data, over a third of St. Louis County's housing was built in the two decades bracketing the 1965–1973 aluminum era.
A chain of documents from three different parties: the permit record, the electrician's completion letter, and an independent engineer's sealed certification. An invoice is not proof — it says what was billed, not what was done.
St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and St. Charles County each run their own electrical permitting, and whole-home remediation is generally permit-and-inspection work. The permit record establishes that the work officially exists and passed a local code inspection.
A letter on the contractor's letterhead naming the CPSC-recognized method used — for example, Alumiconn connectors installed to the UL-listed torque specification — stating the connection count, and confirming that every aluminum termination was addressed: outlets, switches, fixtures, and junction boxes. CPSC Publication 516 says a proper repair includes every connection involving aluminum wire — the letter should say so.
A licensed Professional Engineer — independent of the installer — verifies the work in the field (connector model, sampled torque, scope against the stated count) and issues a sealed certification letter. Independence is the point: an installer certifying their own work is grading their own homework.
The person clearing your file is not an electrician. They scan for a named CPSC-recognized method, a connection count, an every-connection scope statement, and a license and seal from someone who didn't do the install. The three CPSC-recognized permanent repairs: a complete copper rewire, COPALUM crimp connectors, or Alumiconn connectors. Twist-on wire nuts and CO/ALR device swaps are not on that list, and documentation-checking carriers reject them.
CPSC Publication 516 (2011) is the reference underwriters lean on. It describes a complete copper rewire as the best repair but often impractical or prohibitively expensive; COPALUM crimps as proven but installable only by manufacturer-trained electricians with proprietary tooling; and the Alumiconn connector as an acceptable alternative for a permanent repair where COPALUM isn't available. Note the verb: the CPSC recognizes Alumiconn — the commission's own framing, not a product endorsement — and conditions it on a qualified electrician performing the work.
What does not qualify matters just as much. Twist-on wire nuts — including the purple Al/Cu versions, with or without antioxidant paste — are not a CPSC-recognized permanent repair: in CPSC-sponsored testing, substantial numbers of twist-on connectors overheated severely. CO/ALR receptacles and switches failed in CPSC lab tests, don't exist for fixtures, hardwired appliances, or splices, and are at best an incomplete repair. Carriers know both things — decades-old wire-nut jobs get re-flagged the moment a policy is shopped.
